FROM
TINY ACORNS GROW......
From
the seed of an idea that was planted last spring, the Corralitos
Artists’ Collective (CAC) finds itself rapidly sprouting towards
the stars. On
Sunday January 11th the planning committee invited artists from all
over the county to come to a general information meeting.
Those artists
were contacted who had shown an interest in the Collective after
coming out to the Harvest Festival last November or had heard about
us through word of mouth. Thirty-three
enthusiastic artists attended. Many
more were not able to come for one reason or another but let us know
they want to support and be included in this project.
The caliber of
energy, talent, experience and willingness to participate in tending
our growth was amazing and very encouraging. It is clear that this is
truly an idea who’s time has come.
Moving
with this momentum the CAC is in the process of taping into the
talent of those interested and qualified to teach classes and
workshops. We
are currently working on arranging Life Drawing, Plein Aire, Kids
Art, and Hand Built Clay classes and workshops.
These
offerings will be in addition to what is currently on the schedule:
Sefla Joseph’s Intuitive Painting class, Robbie Diallimont’s Kids
Clay class and Elaine
Pinkernell will be offering an adult Hand Built Clay Workshop on
February 20th. This
is just the beginning and much more is to come.
The Collective
would like the art offerings to be driven by community interest and
in this spirit is keeping it’s ear to the ground for signals
from those
inspired to find a way to express their creativity.
Following
on the success of the Harvest Festival exhibit in November, CAC and
the Corralitos Cultural Center (CCC) were in agreement that part of
the exhibit space would remain as a rotating gallery.
This decision
was an easy one given the encouragement of the community to do so and
the benefit it offered the artists. Thank
you CCC for generously lending the Cultural Center for this purpose.
The Corralitos
Gallery is not your typical gallery venue. We
are excited to be able to offer space in the center for art education
and exhibition which does not have to be driven by the income it
generates. In
part this is true given the success of our two fundraising events
from 2009 and our reasonable expectation that this will continue with
future events. What
last years’ events revealed is that there is enough community
interest and support to keep art in Corralitos alive.
At the same
time, it is clear that the Corralitos Gallery and the Cultural Center
is gaining increasing visibility and
is rapidly becoming known
as an attractive destination within the south county area.
Along
with our focus on classes and workshops CAC is also in the process of
formulating fundraising special events for 2010.
There are lots
of exciting and fun ideas percolating at this point.
We will be
looking at the Memorial Day weekend as our first target for a unique
exhibition. A
second annual Summer event/exhibition will take place and in November
we will look forward to our second annual Harvest Festival.
There are
other ideas in the formative phase and all of this will need the
energy and volunteerism of our community. If
this sounds like something you might like being a part of
don’t
hesitate, come on in, there’s plenty of room and more than enough
of all that’s good to
go around!!

Something
is Happening Here! Art and Culture in
Corralitos: An Artists’ Collective is Born
This has been an incredible year for
the Corralitos Cultural Center. Starting with a brand new name in
January, the Corralitos Cultural Council, CCC (formerly the
Corralitos Valley Research and Education Association) took on the
broad tasks of focusing on financial strength, initiating
beautification projects, and reaching out to local businesses and
artists living in our community. We’ve come a long way since 1994
when the community organized and purchased a little church and then
proceeded to transform it into the Corralitos Cultural Center. Our
Center now houses a 60 seat theater, a library, and a large art room,
serving creative, educational, and cultural programs open to all at
low cost.
June brought news of the Cultural
Council of Santa Cruz County’s grant to local, award winning artist Kathleen
Crocetti, for the installation of a mosaic tile wall to grace the
front of our Center. In addition to the grant many local businesses,
individuals and the CCC helped support the project. Many local
families participated in creating the tiles. It’s beauty will be a
reminder for many years about the spirit and sense of community that
is a part of Corralitos. A second project was initiated by
Theo Olsen (with a bit of help from his wonderful family).
Theo came up with a landscape plan, secured materials, and did the
heavy work on installing a beautiful rock, flag stone, and plant
pathway on the side of our building. It looks amazing! In May, the Art Room was transformed
by art teachers Annette Webb and Robbie Dallimonti into
a delightful Mother’s Day Boutique. The day was a pleasure
for all who attended. In July, this dynamic team offered a week long
Art Camp Safari. The camp was attended by 17 plus youngsters
and is still being talked about! After months of preparation the CCC
held it’s first Spaghetti Dinner and Art Show Fundraiser on
August 22nd. Between 200 and 300 friends and neighbors came out to
enjoy the work of local artists, have a glass or two of our excellent
local vintage and enjoy a real gourmet home cooked meal. It was an
event to remember, and will be repeated next year.
Corralitos is rich with a wealth of
extremely talented artists of all stripes. Bringing local artists
together for the Art Show was a real pleasure. The sense of
community, and camaraderie was infectious and was a great part of
what made our August event so enjoyable. Expanding on that energy,
the Corralitos Artists’ Collective was born. This is a fast
growing group of local artists who are building an association, in
concert with the Cultural Center, as a way to find support and
exposure for their work. Seeing the community response in August, the
Collective has decided to create a Harvest Festival for
Saturday, Nov. 14th, with an encore showing on Sunday
Nov.15th. The Harvest Festival will be a fine arts show within a
gallery setting, showcasing the work of nearly 30 fine artists. There
will also be much to enjoy and purchase in the way of arts and crafts
in a “faire” environment outside. If you enjoyed yourself in
August, come out and experience again the music, wine, beautiful art,
and gourmet hors d'oeuvres that Corralitos offers. If you haven’t
had a chance to be part of it all you have a great treat in store! On another exciting note, The
Cultural Center was chosen to be part of the Pajaro Valley Art
Council’s gallery show this year; “Me Casa es Tu Casa”.
The art piece installed, “The Journey Home”, was a collaborative
effort involving 7 artists affiliated with the Cultural Center. Much
thanks to Tom Wolver for his time, and excellent mentoring of
the adults involved with clay work at the Center, and for helping to
make this project happen. You can visit the Sudden Gallery at,
37 Sudden Street, Watsonville. Dates of the exhibit: 10/21/09 through
12/06/09. Call the Sudden Gallery for info: 831-722-3062 The remarkable painter Sefla
Joseph will be doing a painting workshop, December 5th and 6th.
